With only 2 days to go before Lasting Impressions Dental’s Cupcake Day to raise funds for the Canberra RSPCA things are hotting up in the kitchen. Recipes are being trialled, bowls being licked and the final touches put on the icing. Please pop in on on Friday 16 August and sample one (or more) of our fabulous cakes. RSPCA Cupcake Day Pledge

As one of our valued patients, Dr Dai Davies and staff at Lasting Impressions Dental invite you to support us in raising money for the RSPCA ACT through its annual Cupcake Day appeal. Cupcake Day is an RSPCA fundraising initiative to help them care for animals less fortunate than our own pets. Individuals and organisations pledge to make cupcakes and invite guests to make a donation in return for a delicious cupcake. We are holding our Cupcake Day at the surgery on Friday 16 August 2013 but you don’t have to wait until  then to donate. The best time is now, as soon as you read this email! It’s Dental Health Week this week and a great reminder for some of us that we may need to book in for a check-up. Our pearly whites are precious and we want to hold on to them for as long as we can.   The ADA has some great information on all things teeth on their website for Dental Health Week 2013. Who does dental implants?

Dental Implants at Lasting Impressions Dental Our dentists are pleased to be able to offer dental implants as an option for patients who are missing one or more teeth. The benefits of a dental implant to patients are many and great, and our dentists will discuss these with you during your consultation. Dr Davies has completed advanced training in dental implant placement. In most cases he will perform the surgical placement of dental implants as well as the subsequent placement of the crown, bridge or denture. Complex cases requiring grafting or sinus lifts are referred to a dental specialist for the surgical part of the procedure. Dr Davies will work closely with the specialist during the planning phase and will usually place the crown, bridge or denture at Lasting Impressions Dental. Cheese May Prevent Cavities  Consuming dairy products is vital to maintaining good overall health, and it’s especially important to bone health. But there has been little research about how dairy products affect oral health in particular. However, according to a new study published in the May/June 2013 issue of General Dentistry, the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), consuming cheese and other dairy products may help protect teeth against cavities.     The study sampled 68 subjects ranging in age from 12 to 15, and the authors looked at the dental plaque pH in the subjects’ mouths before and after they consumed cheese, milk, or sugar-free yogurt. A pH level lower than 5.5 puts a person at risk for tooth erosion, which is a process that wears away the enamel (or protective outside layer) of teeth. “The higher the pH level is above 5.5, the lower the chance of developing cavities,” explains Vipul Yadav, MDS, lead author of the study. The subjects were assigned into groups randomly. Researchers instructed the first group to eat cheddar cheese, the second group to drink milk, and the third group to eat sugar-free yogurt. Each group consumed their product for three minutes and then swished with water. Researchers measured the pH level of each subject’s mouth at 10, 20, and 30 minutes after consumption. The groups who consumed milk and sugar-free yogurt experienced no changes in the pH levels in their mouths. Subjects who ate cheese, however, showed a rapid increase in pH levels at each time interval, suggesting that cheese has anti-cavity properties. The study indicated that the rising...
