Dental Decay the Most Prevalent Chronic Disease in Children

It is alarming to think that dental decay is the most widespread chronic disease in children and a study by the University of Adelaide under the leadership of Associate Professor Loc Do wants to know why and what can be done to combat it. Associate Professor Do points out that dental health cannot be viewed in isolation. Diet, general health and economic circumstances all play a role. He emphasised the role preventative dental care plays in good dental health. The study, to be undertaken of up to 1800 pre school-aged children, will yield information that can be used to focus on improvements to oral health. One sure way ensuring sound dental health is a regular dental check up. Children need regular check ups as much as adults do and these should form part of your family’s health plan. The dentists at Lasting Impressions Dental know that regular check ups are critical as potential problems can be detected early and treated before they become more serious. They know too, that it can be difficult finding the time to get the kids to the dentist with all the commitments kids and and families have these days. School holidays are a great time for kids to see the dentist. No clashes with sport, school, homework or after school activities and for the September/October school holidays we are offering a special deal on children’s checkups! So there really isn’t a better time to tick this job off your to- do list. Call 6240 8383 today. Lets talk baby teeth

Babies and toddlers are at just as much risk of dental decay as an older child or adult, so caring for your baby’s teeth needs to begin at birth. By establishing good oral hygiene habits early, your child will be well equipped to have healthy teeth for life. Toddler taming If your toddler resists teeth cleaning or struggles to sit still for two minutes, try these suggestions: Consider a battery-powered tooth brush, which adds novelty to cleaning their teeth Sing nursery rhymes or play a favourite song while you help your child brush their teeth Offer a reward every time your toddler allows you to brush for two minutes Encourage your child to practise teeth cleaning (under your supervision) to instill good oral hygiene habits in them from an early age. Some toddlers like to be independent so it is a good idea for them to use one toothbrush while you use another one and take turns at brushing Make flossing and brushing as much fun as you can to avoid any negative association or resistance. Be sure to talk to your dentist if you need more advice   It is important to set a good example Children tend to imitate their parents’ behaviours. If oral hygiene and looking after your teeth are important to you, they will be important to your child. Talk to your child about the importance of healthy teeth. A child who understands that teeth have to last a lifetime is more likely to take care of them. Visit your dentist regularly to maintain your own oral health, which will in turn benefit your child....

5 Good Reason To Wear A Mouthguard

1. Cushions teeth against impact Sports other than traditional contact sports can involve heavy knocks to the teeth and mouth. Wearing a mouthguard while playing any sport where there is a chance of being hit in the jaw or head will help prevent you from chipping, breaking or knocking out a tooth.   2. Protects against jaw joint injuries Wearing a mouthguard helps to absorb and spread the impact or blow to the face which may otherwise result in an injury to your mouth or jaw   3. Protects against soft tissue injuries Cut, grazed or bruised lips, cheeks and gums are likely to occur as a result of direct impact to the mouth area. The reinforcement of a mouthguard can help minimise soft tissue injuries.   4. Helps prevent neck & jaw injuriesAny impact to the neck or jaw can result in serious injury. Wearing a mouthguard at the time of impact reduces the likelihood of jaw dislodgement or neck trauma.   5. May help reduce concussionA head clash or trauma is not uncommon at both game time and in training. Make sure you have your mouthguard in at all times as it may help reduce the chance of concussion. *This information was extracted from: http://www.mouthguardawareness.info/ So there you have it 5 good reasons to wear a mouthguard. 10 Ways kids can take charge of their teeth

Kids can take charge of their teeth by taking these steps: 1. Brush at least twice a day, after breakfast and before bedtime. 2. Brush all of your teeth, not just the front ones. 3. Spend at least 2 or 3 minutes each time you brush. (We like to play a CD – the kids get to pick their favorite song to help pass the time.) 4. Use only toothbrushes with soft bristles. 5. Ask your dentist if an antibacterial mouth rinse is right for you. 6. Learn how to floss your teeth. 7. Brush your tongue to help keep your breath fresh. 8. Visit the dentist twice a year. 9. Besides brushing and flossing, you need to be careful about what you eat and drink. Avoid sugar and eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink water instead of soda. 10. And don’t forget to smile. Here are the Top 10 Healthy Teeth Fun Facts to share and discuss. 1. Prehistoric kids almost never had cavities because they didn’t eat sugar. 2. One in every 2,000 babies is born with a tooth. 3.
